About

The Museum of Carpet is run by the carpet museum trust supported by the Friends of the Carpet Museum.

It is staffed by a small group of paid employees and many volunteers, all of whom will be delighted to see you when you visit.

We host a wide range of activities, events and workshops throughout the year.  Do pop in to see what’s going on!

Visit our shop for wonderful local books, souvenirs and not forgetting our rugs, woven on our power looms which all come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Behind the scenes, we hold a large collection of images and records relating to the town’s carpet industry and can assist you with copyright and reproduction requests.

If you would be interested in volunteering your time to help out with the work of the Museum of Carpet, please do contact us.

ERIH:

European Route of Industrial Heritage

Earlier this year the Carpet Museum Trust received membership into the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). ERIH, a network of more than 1500 sites across 47 countries in Europe, is Europe’s foremost tourism network of industrial heritage sites and visitor attractions. The backbone of the system is made up of Anchor Points – the most important and attractive tourist sites which tell the story of Europe’s industrial history. Associated with these anchor points are Regional Routes, through which can be discovered the industrial history of these landscapes in more detail, and European Theme Routes, which show the diversity of Europe’s industrial history and its common roots. The Museum of Carpet, set up in the Stour Vale Mills, presents traditional cloth weaving techniques on 19th century handlooms as well as magnificent 19th and 20th century power looms still weaving carpet. For more details visit our profile on the offical ERIH website.
